Description
The book "KESTNER, KING OF DOLL MAKERS" By Jan Foulke indicates "Hilda" is the magic name in German Character Babies.  A sweet little girl who is a favorite among doll collectors as well as noncollectors.  Many choose 'Hilda" as their most preferred doll.  Her soft and subtle look makes her such an appealing doll, a combination of factors contribute to her realistic look.  The subtle coloring of her cheeks is peachy instead of harshly rosy.  Her eyebrows are delicately feathered.  She has delicately painted upper and lower lashes.  Her face modeling is different from most character babies - not nearly so wide-eyed as many, her eye sockets are almost half moons.  Her pug nose is rather broad.  Her mouth molding is distinguished by her protruding upper lip which rises quite high into a peak.  Inside are two tiny upper teeth and a separately molded tongue."  This little darling is the bald version with light colored molded hair with a sculpted forelock curl.  J.D.K. ges. gesch Made in Germany - according to "Kestner King of Doll Makers" and the Coleman's "The collectors Encylopedia of Dolls," this is mold #1070.  She measures approx. 17 inches.  The books indicate the "N" on her socket head is for the 17" length.  Her blue glass eyes open and close perfectly (I took pictures of eyes opened and closed and could not put all the pictures on the listing - can only list 12.)  Her head and body are in near perfect condition.  No retouch on her body anywhere and in remarkable condition.  I say near perfect because she is missing one tiny finger (I have made a particular effort to photograph - any one in the doll business knows the tiny missing finger is nothing.)  One arm has very tight elastic and does not fit perfectly flat in her shoulder socket.  There is nothing wrong with the arm - it has fitted this way for more than the 30 years I have had her and I would leave it alone.  She is very snugly strung - can sit in any position you place her little legs and arms.  Hilda was nude when I purchased her, she is now dressed in a vintage one-piece "Undie,"  a long petticoat, and an original antique baby dress which has been altered to fit her beautifully.  The dress is 34 inches long and of course extends far below her little feet - which are wearing crocheted booties.  She is wearing a vintage hand crocheted baby bonnet.  Hilda is a total little darling and has long been the pride of my doll collection - having resided at my smoke free home in a glass protected case for over 30 years.  It is going to be very hard to see her leave for a new home but I need to finalyze some medical bills and extending an invitation to you - bring her to your home to love and cherish.  Please review all pictures carefully - all sales are final on this doll - no returns.  I have tried to give very complete pictures for your review.  Payment by Verified PayPal Only.  Doll will be very carefully packed.  She will be Double Boxed and Insured.  I am posting a $25.00 Shipping and Insurance Fee  It is going to be expensive to ship her in the protected way I would want her shipped to protect this valuable doll.   7/05/08 I have indicated this doll has a minor defect - she is missing the end of her left forefinger which is a minor defect and easily repaired.  I have had a picture of her little hand in one of the pictures and am replacing with a close-up of her little face.  I have so much interest in this doll - I am going to try and give more info - first the bisque is absolutely perfect - if there were more space for pictures I would add additional pictures.  I have tried to give complete pictures.  The markings on the socket head are on the very bottom - I have to pull her little socket up slightly to view all but the J.D.K.  On the right of the J.D.K. there are markings 24 N, looks like an "I" and faint 17.  The books tell me the N is for 17."  On the left of the J.D.K. is Gesch and looks like "12"  Germany - then on the low left are more letters and numbers that I can not make out - some of them look like "asl2io"  I know this makes no sense - but I can not read all the markings and not familiar as to what these #'s, letters are.  The doll is not marked "Hilda" or Mold # unless the Mold # is in the numbers I can not read - there is a whole line of unreadable numbers - at least to me,  as I am afraid to pull the head out further to try and make the numbers and letters out more clear.  Both Coleman's Ency.  and other books indicate not all the dolls had the Hilda name on the dolls.  Perhaps this information will help.  In order to put in more pictures - I will have to remove some and don't know what I could remove - I did remove her little hand and add a full face picture.  This doll's head is in perfect conditon.  She had delicately painted hair, brows and lashes.  Eyes operate perfectly.  Her body except for the broken finger is wonderful.  I took pictures of the little dimples in her arms and legs but not space to post so I had to leave them off.  I will try to answer any questions you may have.   One bit of information - I purchased the doll approx. 30 years ago from a Dallas Teacher that was selling a few of her antique dolls (she had a wonderful collection of German, French dolls) to pay for a trip to Europe.  She indicated she had purchased this doll from an SMU (Southern Methodist University - Dallas) Professor, the doll had belonged to his Mother.
